Des Moines, IA – A brutal Arctic blast will bring extreme cold to much of Iowa starting Monday night, with wind chills expected to plunge as low as -41°F in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 9 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday for central, northern, and western Iowa.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, dangerously cold conditions will impact counties including Polk, Story, Black Hawk, and Webster. Wind chills between -30°F and -41°F will make frostbite possible in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin.

In Cerro Gordo, Hancock, and Kossuth counties, wind chills could drop to -40°F overnight, prompting additional advisories. Southern counties, including Madison, Union, and Cass, will also experience wind chills as low as -33°F.

Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit outdoor exposure. Travel may also be hazardous due to freezing temperatures affecting vehicle function. More cold weather warnings are expected later this week.

For updates, check with the National Weather Service and local emergency management offices.
