Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across central Iowa faced dense fog early Saturday, with visibility dipping under a quarter-mile on major roadways including I-80. The National Weather Service warned motorists to slow down, use low beam headlights, and expect sudden changes in visibility until conditions improved after sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the fog cleared by 6 a.m. as a cold front swept through from north to south. Patchy fog could still linger in low-lying areas early, but sunshine will dominate by late morning with highs near 76 degrees.

Road conditions should improve quickly, but residents are urged to remain cautious during early commutes, especially along rural highways and river valleys. Clear skies and mild air are expected to settle in across Iowa through the weekend, offering a quiet stretch after the morning’s hazard.

Sunday brings abundant sunshine with highs in the mid-70s, making it an ideal day for outdoor plans. Winds remain light out of the northwest. Conditions stay dry and seasonably mild into next week, with highs between 72 and 79 degrees through Wednesday.

No hazardous weather is expected beyond this morning’s fog, but forecasters remind drivers that early autumn often brings sudden changes in visibility, especially near dawn.
