Iowa-Nebraska-South Dakota Thunderstorm Watch: Dangerous Winds and Hail Until 10PM Wednesday

Des Moines, Iowa – Severe thunderstorms are expected to roar across western Iowa, eastern Nebraska, and southeast South Dakota through 10 p.m. Wednesday, with damaging winds, large hail, and lightning likely to disrupt travel and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (No. 460) is in effect for 43 counties in Nebraska, 22 counties in Iowa, and Union County, South Dakota until 10 p.m. CDT. Storms may intensify rapidly along the I-29 and I-80 corridors, with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail over one inch possible.

In Iowa, counties including Carroll, Webster, and Woodbury could experience downed power lines and localized flooding. Nebraska hotspots such as Grand Island, Norfolk, Fremont, and the Omaha metro should prepare for rapid storm development by early evening. Residents in Union County, SD, should also remain alert as storms push northward.

Travelers are urged to avoid non-essential driving, secure loose outdoor items, and keep devices charged in case of outages. Campers, sports teams, and fairgoers should seek shelter immediately when thunder is heard.
