Rochester, MN – A powerful winter storm is set to impact parts of Minnesota and Iowa, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds overnight into Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse, WI, ongoing rain will transition to snow from west to east, beginning around 11 PM in Rochester, MN, and around 5 AM in La Crosse, WI. The heaviest snowfall rates, reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour, are expected during this transition. Blizzard conditions are anticipated west of the Mississippi River as winds increase overnight, with gusts as high as 55 mph.
A Blizzard Warning remains in effect for parts of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa, including Wabasha, Olmsted, Winona, Mower, Fillmore, Mitchell, Howard, Floyd, and Chickasaw counties, from midnight Tuesday through 3 PM Wednesday. Snowfall totals in these areas are expected to range between 4 and 9 inches, while Dodge County could see up to 10 inches.
The NWS warns of hazardous travel conditions, especially during the Wednesday morning commute, as widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds may also cause tree damage. Travelers are advised to carry a winter survival kit and check road conditions at 511ia.org in Iowa and 511mn.org in Minnesota before heading out.
Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power outages due to the strong winds and heavy snow accumulation.
