Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – Hazy skies are already filtering the sunshine across the Mississippi River Valley, and the sticky air is only the beginning. By this afternoon, oppressive heat will build across the Quad Cities before a more dangerous round of thunderstorms develops, bringing the potential for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, heat index values will climb into the 95 to 105-degree range today. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for portions of the region west and southwest of the Quad Cities, while hot and humid conditions extend across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois.
Air quality also remains a concern. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources continues an Air Quality Alert through late Monday morning for eastern Iowa because of Canadian wildfire smoke. Smoke levels near Davenport, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City have reached unhealthy levels at times, especially for sensitive groups. Residents with asthma, heart disease, children, older adults, and outdoor workers should reduce prolonged outdoor activity.
The weather pattern becomes much more active later today. The National Weather Service expects two rounds of thunderstorms, with the stronger round developing from late afternoon into Monday evening. The Storm Prediction Center places areas along and north of Interstate 80 in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather. Locations south of I-80 remain under a Slight Risk.
The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts exceeding 75 mph, although large hail and brief spin-up tornadoes are also possible as storms organize into clusters. Drivers on Interstates 80, 74, 280, and U.S. Highway 61 should prepare for rapidly changing visibility, heavy rain, and dangerous crosswinds.
Keep outdoor activities brief during the hottest part of the afternoon, stay hydrated, and monitor weather alerts before traveling this evening. Charge mobile devices and secure loose outdoor furniture before storms arrive.
Behind the cold front, noticeably cooler and drier air settles in. Tuesday turns mostly sunny with a high near 85 degrees, followed by sunny skies and highs around 80 degrees Wednesday. Long-range outlooks continue to point toward above-normal temperatures returning later next week.
