While smoke concentrations are expected to be highest farther east, some haze may still be noticeable around central Iowa.
The weather becomes increasingly active later today. According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are expected to develop this evening, with some storms capable of becoming severe. Damaging wind gusts will be the primary concern, although large hail and an isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out. Storm Prediction Center guidance places portions of Iowa in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather.
Travelers along Interstates 35, 80, and 235 should monitor conditions closely this evening. Strong wind gusts, lightning, brief torrential rain, and rapidly changing visibility could affect the evening commute. Secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
Behind the front, temperatures ease considerably. Tuesday reaches the mid-80s with lingering smoke possible before skies brighten. Wednesday brings mostly sunny skies with highs near 81 degrees, offering a welcome break from the oppressive heat. A few isolated showers return Thursday, but widespread severe weather is not expected at this time.
Long-range outlooks continue to suggest temperatures may trend above normal again later next week, bringing another stretch of midsummer warmth to Iowa.
