Quad Cities, Iowa/Ill. – A weak weather system moving through Wednesday night could bring light snow and pockets of freezing drizzle to parts of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois, raising concerns about slippery travel into the Thursday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service office in the Quad Cities, light snow is expected mainly south of Interstate 80 overnight, with accumulations ranging from a dusting up to around 1 inch in some locations. Forecasters said a period of freezing drizzle is also possible farther south, mainly south of U.S. Highway 34.

The primary concern is travel conditions. The weather service said reduced visibility and slick surfaces are possible, including roads, bridges, sidewalks and parking lots. Conditions could deteriorate quickly in spots where freezing drizzle develops, creating thin ice that can be difficult to see.

Timing posted by the weather service indicated the greatest risk window runs from about 9 p.m. Wednesday through 5 a.m. Thursday, with slippery travel potentially lingering into the Thursday morning commute even after precipitation tapers.

Officials urged drivers to monitor forecasts for updates and check road conditions before heading out. In Iowa, the weather service pointed residents to 511ia.org for roadway information. In Illinois, officials recommended checking gettingaroundillinois.com.

The affected area includes communities across the Quad Cities region and surrounding counties, with the best chance for snow and slick travel focused south of I-80 and the potential for freezing drizzle farther south near and below the Highway 34 corridor.

For commuters, students and early-shift workers, the timing could coincide with overnight drives and the start of Thursday morning travel, when bridges and untreated surfaces tend to ice first.

Forecast details may change as the system moves through, and residents were encouraged to rely on official updates through Thursday morning.
