Des Moines, IA – Iowa emergency officials are urging residents to begin preparing today for potential ice storms this winter, stressing that freezing rain can create far more dangerous and disruptive conditions than snowfall. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), ice accumulation can snap tree limbs, damage powerlines, and make travel treacherous across Central and Eastern Iowa.

According to NOAA, even a thin coat of ice is enough to overload weakened branches and create hazardous driving conditions along major routes, including I-80, I-35, Highway 65, and I-235. Iowa’s combination of open rural stretches, tree-lined neighborhoods, and long-distance commuter routes increases the risk when freezing rain develops. With fluctuating temperatures this week, emergency managers say today is the ideal time to begin winter preparation.

According to the National Weather Service, homeowners should start by trimming weak or damaged branches near homes, garages, and sidewalks. These limbs often fall first once ice begins to accumulate. NOAA also warns drivers not to raise windshield wipers before storms, as they may freeze to the glass and break; keeping them lowered and covered is recommended.

Officials urge residents to maintain at least a week’s supply of non-perishable food, bottled water, and necessary prescriptions. Ice storms can cause prolonged outages and limit travel, especially in rural areas where repair crews may need more time to access damage sites. Residents are also advised not to park vehicles under trees, where ice-weighted limbs may fall without warning.

To prepare for potential outages, emergency managers recommend fully charging phones, flashlights, power banks, and essential devices today. Homeowners who use generators should store extra gasoline safely and run a test to ensure equipment is working properly. Stocking rock salt or ice melt can help prevent slip hazards around porches, steps, and walkways.

“Ice storms can disrupt daily life across Iowa for days,” the NWS said. “Starting prep today is the best protection heading into winter.”
