Des Moines, IA – A typical July day is in store with temperatures ranging in the 80s to near 90 and elevated humidity under mostly sunny skies. Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph, with higher gusts close to 30 mph possible at times in northern Iowa.

According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, the extended forecast is highlighted by increasing heat and humidity next week. The weekend will feature highs generally in the 80s to near 90. Saturday looks dry, but chances for showers and storms return Sunday. The threat of severe weather looks low, but brief heavy downpours are possible.

Highs in the 90s and humid conditions will push heat index values to near or above 100 next week. The heat wave peaks around the middle of the week.

In Appanoose County, a nearly stationary area of rain has dropped between 1.5 and 2.5 inches in the past couple of hours. Up to another inch is possible through 8 a.m. today. Please use caution if traveling through this region early today.

The detailed daily forecast indicates mostly sunny skies with upper 80s to near 90 degrees today and Saturday. Sunday brings a chance of showers and storms with mid to upper 80s. Next week will see hot and humid conditions with heat index values soaring over 100 degrees. The peak of the heat wave is expected around midweek, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
