Des Moines, IA – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of southern and central Iowa on Monday, with conditions expected to create an extreme fire risk from noon to 8 p.m. The National Weather Service warns that warm temperatures, dry air, and strong winds will make fire spread rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, southwest winds will range from 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels will drop to between 20% and 25% in the afternoon, further increasing fire danger.

The affected areas include Dallas, Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek, Cass, Adair, Madison, Warren, Marion, Mahaska, Adams, Union, Clarke, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Taylor, Ringgold, Decatur, Wayne, Appanoose, and Davis counties.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution with any activities that could ignite a fire. Sparks from equipment, discarded cigarettes, or unattended campfires could quickly become uncontrollable blazes under these conditions.

A Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or imminent. Residents should stay informed and prepared to act quickly in case of an emergency.
