Iowa City, IA – New details are emerging after a mass shooting in downtown Iowa City left five people injured early Sunday, April 19, with police now announcing multiple charges against a 17-year-old suspect.
According to Iowa City Police, the shooting happened around 1:45 a.m. in the 100 block of East College Street at the Pedestrian Mall in downtown Iowa City, Johnson County, near the University of Iowa campus. Investigators say Damarian M. Jones, 17, of Cedar Rapids, allegedly became involved in a large fight involving up to 40 people before obtaining a firearm and opening fire.
Police say the first officer arrived within seconds of being dispatched. During the incident, Jones allegedly fired six shots into a crowd before fleeing the scene. A Hawk Alert was issued by the University of Iowa shortly after 1:50 a.m.
Five individuals were struck by gunfire. One victim suffered a life-threatening head injury and remains in critical condition, while others sustained serious injuries requiring surgeries. Two victims remain hospitalized as of this update.
Authorities say none of the victims were specifically targeted, and there is no indication they were connected to the suspect.
Jones is now facing multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder, three counts of willful injury causing serious injury, two counts of willful injury causing bodily injury, and going armed with intent. Police emphasize the charges are allegations.
The investigation remains active, and Jones has not yet been located. Officials say more arrests and charges are possible as detectives continue reviewing evidence, including more than 150 tips and multiple search warrants.
