Des Moines, IA — Central Iowa residents should prepare for significant weather changes starting New Year’s Day as light snow and arctic air are set to dominate the forecast. Sunny skies on Wednesday will provide a brief reprieve before a quick-moving clipper system brings snow on Thursday, followed by a dramatic temperature drop Friday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), sunny conditions and highs near 31 degrees are expected Wednesday. However, a system arriving Thursday will produce light snow across the region, with accumulations expected to be minor but impactful. As the snow departs, polar air from Canada will send Friday’s high temperatures plunging into the teens, with overnight lows in the single digits.
Roadways, including I-80 and major Des Moines-area streets, may see slick spots during Thursday’s snowfall. Travelers are advised to exercise caution and allow extra travel time, especially during the morning and evening commutes.
The coldest air of the week will arrive Friday, with lows ranging from 4 to 12 degrees. Wind chills could make outdoor conditions dangerous, especially during the early morning hours. Residents should dress warmly, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and monitor weather updates for any changes to the forecast.
Looking ahead, the weekend offers no significant warming trend. Temperatures will remain frigid, with another chance of snow developing late Saturday into Sunday.
