Philadelphia, PA – A stormy New Year’s Eve is in store for eastern Pennsylvania as thunderstorms, gusty winds, and small hail are forecast tonight. Residents planning outdoor celebrations are urged to prepare for moderate to heavy rain beginning in the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will develop after 5 p.m. and intensify into thunderstorms before midnight. Winds could reach speeds of up to 40 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions along major routes, including I-95. Rainfall amounts may total up to 0.75 inches, with isolated areas experiencing localized flooding.

As the storm moves out early on New Year’s Day, conditions will improve with partly sunny skies and milder temperatures in the upper 40s. However, strong winds of up to 20 mph will persist, particularly in the morning.

The extended forecast for the week offers a mix of sunshine and cooler conditions. By Thursday, expect mostly clear skies with highs near 39°F. Friday and Saturday will continue the clear trend, with highs in the upper 30s and nighttime lows dipping into the mid-20s.

Those hosting gatherings or traveling tonight should keep an eye on weather updates and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding. The National Weather Service advises against driving through water-covered roadways due to unpredictable depths and currents.
