Des Moines, IA – Severe weather is expected to impact Iowa on Friday evening, with the potential for tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, a cold front moving through the state will trigger storms, particularly in areas north of Highway 30.

The NWS warns that these storms could bring wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, which could result in significant property damage. Hail larger than 1 inch in diameter is also possible with the strongest storms. The risk of tornadoes is lower but cannot be ruled out.

The storms are expected to intensify by Friday evening, with the highest threat window between 5 p.m. and midnight. The NWS advises residents to stay weather-aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to take shelter if necessary.

The severe weather is anticipated to weaken overnight as the front moves out of the region. However, the risk remains significant, and Iowans are urged to monitor local forecasts closely.
