Des Moines, IA – A bitter arctic blast will grip Iowa this week, bringing life-threatening cold and dangerously low wind chills. Temperatures will plummet beginning Monday night, with wind chills between -20°F and -35°F across central and southern Iowa.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from late Monday through Tuesday morning. Exposure to these conditions could cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes. Residents should limit outdoor activity, dress in multiple layers, and check on vulnerable individuals.

Monday will see a high near 7°F with a 40% chance of snow early. Overnight temperatures will drop to -10°F. Tuesday will be the coldest day of the week, with highs near 2°F and lows around -6°F. Wednesday brings a slight chance of morning snow, followed by partly cloudy skies and a high near 5°F.

Temperatures will slowly rebound by Thursday, reaching 6°F, with a milder trend by Saturday. However, cold remains a serious risk. Stay updated with forecasts and take necessary precautions against the extreme cold.
