Des Moines, IA – Bitterly cold temperatures continue across Iowa today, with wind chills dropping as low as -30°F in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for much of northern, central, and southern Iowa, warning of dangerously low wind chills through Thursday morning.
According to the NWS, wind chills as low as -28°F are expected today, with an even colder blast tonight. By early Thursday, parts of the state could see wind chills as frigid as -32°F. Frostbite can occur in less than 30 minutes in these conditions, and prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, wear multiple layers, and cover exposed skin.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring some relief with sunny skies but continued cold temperatures, with a high near 9°F. A gradual warming trend will begin Friday, with highs reaching the 30s by the weekend. By Sunday, temperatures may climb to the low 40s, offering a temporary break from the deep freeze.
