Des Moines, IA — Central Iowa residents are preparing for an Arctic blast, with dangerously low wind chill values forecast. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a cold weather advisory starting Sunday at 3 a.m. and lasting until noon.
According to the NWS, wind chill values could drop as low as -33°F in north-central Iowa and -25°F across the state’s southwest. These conditions increase the risk of frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia are serious threats, particularly for those without proper winter clothing.
The advisory includes major cities such as Des Moines, Ames, and Waterloo, extending to Marion and Warren counties. Residents should also anticipate subzero temperatures continuing into Monday and Tuesday mornings, potentially repeating hazardous conditions.
Officials urge people to limit outdoor activities and wear layered clothing, hats, and gloves. Travel precautions should include winter safety kits in vehicles. Those needing shelter are encouraged to contact local warming centers.
Prepare now for frigid conditions, and ensure vulnerable populations like the elderly are safe.
