Des Moines, IA – A powerful blizzard is set to impact Iowa starting Tuesday night, bringing high winds, significant snowfall, and dangerous whiteout conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for much of central and northern Iowa, in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday through 3 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, rain will transition into snow overnight, with accumulations ranging from 2 to 6 inches, depending on location. Areas near the Minnesota border may see the highest totals. Winds will intensify, gusting up to 65 mph, which will create severe blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near zero in some locations. Rural and open areas are expected to experience the worst conditions.
Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous, especially during the Wednesday morning commute. Officials advise against non-essential travel. Those who must drive should carry an emergency winter survival kit and prepare for sudden visibility drops. Strong winds may also lead to tree damage and power outages.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Wednesday afternoon as winds begin to subside. Travelers are encouraged to check the Iowa 511 app or website for real-time road conditions and updates. Residents should take precautions, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and stay informed as the storm develops.
