Sioux Falls, SD – A mix of light snow and powerful winds is expected to cause hazardous driving conditions along Interstate 29 Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), scattered snow showers will intensify after 4 p.m. as an arctic cold front moves into the region. Visibility may drop below half a mile in isolated areas, with narrow snow bands potentially delivering 1 to 2 inches of accumulation by Wednesday morning. Strong northwest winds, gusting up to 45 mph, will further complicate travel, especially west of Interstate 29.

Drivers are urged to plan for potential delays and slippery roads as temperatures drop rapidly, increasing the risk of flash freezing. Light snow accumulation combined with high winds may reduce visibility and create hazardous conditions through late evening.

The NWS warns that the greatest travel impacts will likely occur during the evening commute and persist into the night. While many areas will see minimal accumulation, localized heavier snow bands could create sudden, treacherous conditions.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through the week, with highs struggling to reach 20°F by Wednesday. Additional light snow is forecast for Thursday, though no significant accumulation is expected.

Drivers should monitor updated forecasts and consider avoiding non-essential travel. Those on the road should reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and use caution around snowplows and other vehicles.
