Gray skies linger across Indiana today, the kind that hint something colder is on the way. A biting wind has settled in, and by midweek, Hoosiers could see their first true taste of winter as a cold front sweeps across the state.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will likely begin late tonight and transition to a rain-and-snow mix by Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures will fall sharply — from highs near 42°F Wednesday to the mid-20s by night. Roads could become slick, especially on untreated surfaces, as any remaining moisture refreezes by Thursday morning. Drivers should allow extra time for morning commutes and watch for black ice along I-65 and I-70.

Thursday brings another push of winter air, with highs barely reaching the low 30s and occasional snow showers possible. While accumulations remain light (less than an inch in most areas), the bigger story is the drop in temperature. By Friday morning, lows could dip into the teens — the coldest readings of the season so far.

Meteorologists are also tracking another clipper system expected to slide across the Great Lakes between December 11–17, possibly reinforcing snow chances and colder-than-normal air through next week.
