Indianapolis, IN – Bitter cold is gripping central Indiana Monday, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and anyone spending time outdoors as wind chills drop well below zero during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, wind chills across much of central Indiana are expected to remain subzero through Tuesday morning, with the coldest conditions occurring early Monday. Wind chills may fall as low as -15 degrees in some areas, with values near -10 degrees again Tuesday morning.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for Indianapolis, Marion County, and much of central Indiana through 9 a.m. Tuesday. Southwestern Indiana counties are expected to see the advisory expire earlier Monday morning.
Roadway conditions may be affected as lingering snow showers taper off around sunrise, followed by breezy winds that can refreeze moisture on untreated roads. Drivers along major corridors including I-65, I-70, I-69, and I-465 should remain alert for slick patches, especially on bridges and overpasses.
High temperatures Monday will struggle to climb out of the teens. Forecast highs include 13°F in Indianapolis, 11°F in Lafayette, 14°F in Muncie and Bloomington, and 17°F in Seymour, according to the NWS. Despite some sunshine returning later in the day, wind gusts will keep conditions feeling significantly colder.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, and bring pets indoors. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under extreme wind chills. Drivers are also encouraged to keep emergency kits in vehicles and check on elderly neighbors.
Wind chills are expected to improve slightly Tuesday afternoon, but cold conditions will persist across central Indiana.
