Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is bracing for its coldest stretch of the season as Arctic air pushes into the region tonight, sending wind chills below zero by Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, temperatures will plunge overnight with wind chills as low as -5°F to -10°F in northern areas, including Lafayette, Kokomo, and Crawfordsville, and 0°F to 10°F across the Indianapolis metro area. The bitter cold will linger into Friday morning, keeping “feels-like” readings below zero across much of central and northern Indiana.

“Much colder air moves in tonight and lingers into Friday,” the weather service said, noting that wind chills will remain dangerously low, particularly for early morning commuters and children waiting at bus stops.

Actual temperatures Thursday and Friday will hover in the teens to low 20s, with high temperatures struggling to climb above freezing until the weekend. Winds will remain steady from the northwest at 10–20 mph, adding to the frigid feel.

Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers, wear hats and gloves, and limit time outdoors to prevent frostbite. The weather service also reminds the public to bring pets indoors and check on elderly neighbors during the cold snap.

While no snow is expected during this period, forecasters say the Arctic pattern will persist through Friday before slightly milder air arrives this weekend. Highs are expected to rebound into the upper 30s and low 40s by Sunday, offering some relief from the intense cold.
