An off-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer, dining with friends, apprehended a suspect after a fatal shooting outside a restaurant Friday night.

According to IMPD, officers responded to a reported fight inside a restaurant in the 4300 block of Southport Crossings Drive just before 9 p.m. While en route, dispatchers updated the call to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found an off-duty IMPD officer holding the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Randy Godfrey, at gunpoint in the parking lot. Godfrey was taken into custody without incident.

A male victim was found suffering from gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses told detectives the altercation began inside the restaurant before escalating outside. The off-duty officer, who attempted to break up the fight, ran toward the gunfire and detained Godfrey until uniformed officers arrived.
