Indianapolis, Indiana — A weak storm system will bring light snow to parts of central Indiana on New Year’s Eve, with the greatest impacts expected along and northeast of Interstate 74 during the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, light snow will develop late this afternoon and continue through the evening, ending after midnight. Snow accumulations of up to 1 inch are possible along and northeast of I-74, while 1 to locally 2 inches could fall farther northeast, especially along a Lafayette-to-New Castle line.
Areas most likely to see accumulating snow include Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Anderson, Marion, and New Castle. Snowfall amounts decrease toward Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Bloomington, where little to no accumulation is expected.
Roadways that may be impacted include I-74, I-69, I-65, I-70, and US-52, along with secondary roads and ramps. Even light snow could create slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, particularly during peak New Year’s Eve travel this evening.
Temperatures will fall into the 20s late tonight, allowing any lingering moisture to refreeze. Travel conditions should gradually improve after midnight as snow exits the region.
For New Year’s Day (Thursday), colder but quieter weather is expected, with dry conditions and seasonably cool temperatures, reducing the risk of additional travel impacts.
The National Weather Service advises drivers heading out for New Year’s Eve celebrations to allow extra travel time, slow down on slick roads, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially northeast of I-74.
