Indianapolis, IN – Emergency crews responded to a significant house fire late Sunday night after flames broke out at a residence on 3944 Lawndale Avenue, displacing three adults and several pets but causing no injuries, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD). The fire was reported around 9:25 p.m., prompting a multi-agency response as heavy flames spread quickly through the single-story home.

According to IFD, the occupants were alerted by a quick-acting neighbor who noticed the fire and immediately notified the residents, allowing them to escape safely before conditions worsened. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find intense flames pushing from multiple areas of the structure.

Crews from IFD, Pike Township Fire Department, and Speedway Fire Department worked together to attack the fire, bringing it under control in approximately 20 minutes. Photos released by the department show heavy smoke, flames shooting from the roofline, and extensive damage to the home’s exterior and interior.

Officials say the residence sustained “significant damage” throughout, leaving the three adults and their pets displaced while the investigation continues. Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.

First responders on scene reported no injuries to residents, pets, or firefighters.

The quick work of neighboring residents and fire crews prevented a more serious outcome, according to officials. The American Red Cross is expected to assist the displaced occupants while the home is assessed for structural stability.

The fire marks another reminder for homeowners to check smoke alarms and remain aware of hazards as colder-weather heating sources become more common during fall and winter months. Additional updates are expected as investigators complete their review.
