Nappanee, IN – A 76-year-old woman from Nappanee died after an SUV struck a horse-drawn buggy she was riding in Sunday evening.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department reported that the crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on State Road 19 near County Road 1050 North. The buggy carried three other passengers, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
According to authorities, the horse pulling the buggy also died as a result of the collision. The name of the elderly woman who died has not been released as of Monday.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, but no further details have been provided. Traffic on State Road 19 was temporarily halted while emergency personnel responded to the scene.
Horse-drawn buggies remain a common form of transportation in Nappanee and surrounding rural areas, where accidents involving motor vehicles and buggies are an ongoing concern for law enforcement.
