Indiana – The first full week of December is biting back across central Indiana this morning, with frigid air and light snow signaling the start of winter’s grip. The air feels sharp at 18°F, and forecasters warn the next 24 hours could turn slick for drivers across Indianapolis and nearby counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, freezing fog may linger through mid-morning, producing thin ice on untreated roads and sidewalks. Light snow is expected to move through late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning, bringing up to half an inch of accumulation. Even a light coating could cause slippery conditions on I-70, I-65, and neighborhood streets during the early commute.

Temperatures will remain locked below freezing through Thursday, and wind chills near zero will make the air feel much colder. The bitter pattern continues into the weekend as another wave of Arctic air sweeps down from the Great Lakes, keeping highs only in the 20s and low 30s through Sunday.

Meteorologists note this marks the region’s first true December cold snap, part of a wider U.S. chill spreading from the Upper Midwest into the Ohio Valley. “It’s not a major storm,” officials said, “but it’s the kind of weather that catches people off guard—especially early in the season.”

Residents should prepare for icy spots on bridges, low visibility from patchy fog, and frozen windshields Thursday morning. Keep travel gear, gloves, and de-icer handy before heading out.
