Columbus, Indiana – Roads across central and south central Indiana are taking on water right now as repeated thunderstorms push rainfall totals past 2 inches, with more rain falling before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Advisory remains in effect for Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Monroe, Morgan and Shelby counties. Radar and automated gauges show 1 to 2.5 inches of rain has already fallen, and another 1 to 2 inches could accumulate before the storms weaken.

Low-lying roads, small streams and poor drainage areas are the biggest concern. In Columbus, Greensburg and North Vernon, standing water may cover neighborhood streets and rural routes. Areas near State Road 46, U.S. 31 and low-water crossings in Brown County and around Nashville could become impassable in spots before daybreak.

Emergency officials warn that most flood fatalities occur in vehicles. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a car off the road, especially at night when visibility drops.

Avoid non-essential travel until after 3:30 a.m. If you encounter water over the roadway, turn around immediately. Additional advisories may follow if rainfall rates remain high toward sunrise.
