Indianapolis, Ind. – Hazy skies and smoky air continue to hang over central Indiana Monday, creating unhealthy conditions for some residents while setting the stage for a much different weather pattern by Tuesday. Anyone spending extended time outside this afternoon could notice reduced air quality before thunderstorms begin developing late Monday into Tuesday, bringing another round of travel concerns across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis Office of Sustainability, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect through midnight Monday night for Marion County, including Indianapolis. Fine particulate pollution and elevated ozone levels, fueled in part by Canadian wildfire smoke and summer heat, may reach levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Children, older adults, and anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions should limit prolonged outdoor activity.
The smoke is part of a broader plume affecting much of the Great Lakes and Midwest. Additional smoke may drift south again Tuesday behind a strong cold front, keeping air quality concerns in focus even as weather conditions begin to change.
Meanwhile, meteorologists are closely monitoring thunderstorms expected to develop Tuesday. The greatest chance arrives during the afternoon and evening, although a few showers could develop earlier in the day. Some storms may become severe, producing damaging wind gusts, torrential downpours, frequent lightning, and localized flooding. While damaging winds remain the primary concern, forecasters say all severe weather hazards, including an isolated tornado, cannot be ruled out.
If you’re traveling on I-65, I-69, I-70, or I-74 Tuesday afternoon, expect changing conditions and allow extra time if storms develop. Wet pavement and reduced visibility could slow the evening commute.
Monday stays warm with patchy smoke and highs near 88 degrees. Temperatures fall into the lower 70s tonight before Tuesday climbs back to 89 degrees ahead of the approaching cold front. Cooler, drier air follows, with sunshine returning Wednesday and highs dropping into the upper 70s.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures later next week, signaling that summer warmth is likely to rebound after this midweek cooldown.
