Indiana Train Tragedy: Crew’s Efforts Insufficient in Preventing Fatal Collision

La Porte County, IN – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train near the Canadian National Railroad Crossing at State Road 39, Noble Township.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, it happened Wednesday around 11:38 PM, when an eastbound Canadian National Freight Train crew desperately tried to stop the train when they noticed a person on the tracks. Despite their exhaustive efforts, the train, traveling between Long Lane and SR 39, could not be halted in time, resulting in a fatal collision west of the SR 39 crossing.

The identity of the pedestrian has been confirmed, and next of kin have been notified. For more details, the La Porte County Coroner’s Office will be the point of contact. The incident saw the involvement of several officials, including Sergeant Scott Lanoue, Detective Justin Gorny, Deputies Shayne Landry, David Grimberg, and Kasz Billings, alongside the Noble Township Volunteer Fire Department and La Porte County EMS.
