Gary, IN – Overnight lane closures on northbound I-65 in Lake County are set to begin Wednesday as crews prepare to launch Phase 2 of ongoing bridge deck work just north of Ridge Road.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Phase 2 will bring a new traffic configuration on northbound I-65 between 35th Avenue and the I-94 interchange. While three lanes will remain open near 35th Avenue, one lane will be closed in each direction north of eastbound I-94 to southbound I-65. The updated layout will remain in place through late June.
During this phase, the ramp from Ridge Road to northbound I-65 will be closed. Motorists should follow a detour via State Road 53/Broadway and I-94 to access northbound lanes.
Additionally, the I-94 westbound ramp to I-65 southbound remains closed until late August. The designated detour uses the SR 53/Broadway interchange ramps for turnaround access to I-65 southbound from I-94 eastbound.
INDOT also warned that bridge deck overlay maintenance will continue through mid-October at three major points: over 35th Avenue, the I-65 to I-94 westbound ramp, and the Chicago, Ft. Wayne & Eastern Railroad (CFE) bridge.
The Ridge Road bridge deck overlay over the Norfolk Southern Railroad between Ridge Road and 61st Avenue is also part of the same project. That segment, including the ramp from Ridge Road to southbound I-65, is expected to remain closed until mid-August.
Motorists are urged to remain alert and plan ahead for shifting patterns and overnight work hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
