La Porte County, IN – Drivers in northwest Indiana should prepare for overnight lane closures on I-94 as part of ongoing construction near Michigan City.
An eastbound lane of I-94 will be closed tonight, Thursday, during overnight hours, with a similar closure scheduled for the westbound direction Friday, May 2. Both closures will occur between U.S. 421 and U.S. 20/35 to allow crews to install additional barrier walls.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation: Northwest, the closures will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and are part of a traffic configuration project aimed at improving safety through the construction zone. The layout will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction, but lanes will be shifted left with the work zone on the right.
The impacted area includes a stretch of I-94 passing near Trail Creek and Michigan City, and commuters should anticipate reduced speeds and potential delays. No detours have been announced, but drivers are urged to use caution and plan for alternate routes if necessary.
Work zone signage and traffic barrels will be in place to guide motorists safely through the modified traffic pattern. INDOT officials advise staying alert and watching for workers in the area during the closure hours.
This construction is part of a broader safety enhancement effort along I-94 in La Porte County. Further updates are expected as the project progresses.
