Terre Haute, IN – A major shift in traffic patterns is set to begin along I-70 in Vigo County this weekend, with new lane closures and detours affecting thousands of drivers near Terre Haute.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), beginning on or after Saturday, March 29, crews will redirect the left eastbound lane of I-70 across the median into westbound lanes. The right eastbound lane will move onto the shoulder. Meanwhile, both westbound lanes will shift toward the westbound shoulder during the construction phase.

These changes will affect a stretch of I-70 between U.S. 41 and Thompson Ditch, just west of Sidenbender Road (25th Street). Westbound traffic will briefly shift into the median before re-entering the westbound lanes near U.S. 41. INDOT also notes that night-time lane closures may occur during the pattern change.

The lane shifts support bridge replacement work over 7th Street and the CSX railroad. This phase is expected to last several months and is weather-dependent. The full project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, follow posted signage, and prepare for delays in the area. Further traffic shifts are expected throughout the season as construction progresses.
