Wayne County, IN – A Richmond woman was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash that closed Interstate 70 eastbound for several hours.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 1:03 a.m. near the 137-mile marker. Deputies responding to the scene found a small passenger vehicle that had veered off the road, hit an embankment, overturned, and landed on its roof on the south side of the interstate.
The driver, identified as Connie Jones, 55, of Richmond, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said she had been ejected during the crash. Emergency responders from Reid Health EMS and multiple fire departments assisted on site.
A passenger in the vehicle, Leovigildo Muniz, 56, also of Richmond, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. Muniz told authorities that Jones had traveled to Indianapolis to pick him up after work, and they were returning to Richmond when the vehicle allegedly veered unexpectedly to the right, causing the fatal rollover.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Interstate 70 eastbound was closed for approximately three hours as emergency crews investigated and cleared the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to assisting agencies, including the Indiana State Police, Cambridge City Police Department, Hagerstown Police Department, Reid Health EMS, Milton Fire Department, Cambridge City Fire Department, and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office.
