Steuben County, IN – A fatal crash involving two semi-trucks and a pickup closed westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road Friday evening. The crash occurred near mile marker 146.6, just east of the I-69 junction in Fremont.
According to Indiana State Police, the accident happened at 5:15 p.m. A Freightliner semi failed to stop for backed-up traffic, striking a 2016 Ford F-150 and rear-ending another semi. The impact heavily damaged the Freightliner’s cab, trapping the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.
The driver of the Ford F-150 and the second semi were uninjured, but the passenger in the Freightliner was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic on westbound I-90 remained shut down for five hours while authorities investigated. The Indiana State Police, along with local fire and emergency personnel, responded to the scene. Cleanup continued well into the evening, with one lane reopening late Thursday night. The investigation is ongoing, and the name of the deceased has not yet been released.
