Newton County, IN – Residents in Indiana are receiving fraudulent tax lien notices demanding immediate payment, officials warn. The scam letters falsely claim the recipient owes thousands of dollars to the state.
According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana Attorney General’s Office confirmed the notices are fake. The fraudulent documents claim a lien has been filed against the recipient’s property and demand immediate payment. The scammers threaten legal action if the money is not paid.
Officials advise residents to ignore the letters and not call the listed number. When one Indiana recorder attempted to contact the number, the person on the other end hung up after being questioned.
The fraudulent notices appear official, referencing tax investigations and public lien records. However, state officials clarified that Indiana recorders handle federal tax liens, while county clerks manage state tax liens.
Authorities urge residents to report these letters to the Indiana Attorney General’s Office and dispose of them properly. Law enforcement advises against sharing personal or financial information with unknown contacts.
Residents should stay vigilant and verify tax-related communications with official state agencies before taking action.
