Gary, IN – A convicted felon from Chicago led police on a high-speed chase on I-80 before crashing and flipping his SUV late Wednesday night, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. The 52-year-old suspect, who had an active arrest warrant, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital before being booked into jail.
The pursuit began around 10:30 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a Jeep SUV near Burr Street on I-80 in Gary. A records check revealed the driver was wanted out of Schererville. When officers attempted to pull him over, he refused to stop and continued westbound at speeds exceeding 90 mph, weaving through traffic and nearly striking other vehicles.
Near the I-94 exit to Chicago, the suspect lost control, striking a concrete barrier before flipping his vehicle. Officers found him trapped inside, with a pedal pinning one of his legs. Lansing Fire Rescue EMS responded, and he was taken to a local hospital before being medically cleared and booked into the Lake County Jail.
Authorities recovered two firearms from the suspect’s vehicle. He had a prior conviction for homicide and could face multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a violent felon and resisting arrest.
The case remains under investigation.
