Richmond, Indiana – Drivers along the Indiana-Ohio border face near-zero visibility early Monday as dense fog cuts sightlines to one quarter mile or less, creating dangerous conditions during the peak morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect until 10 a.m. EST in eastern Indiana, including Richmond, Connersville, Liberty and Winchester, and until 11 a.m. EST across western Ohio, including Dayton, Springfield, Sidney and areas north toward Lima. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile at times, especially along rural stretches and river valleys.
INDOT reports rapidly changing visibility along I-70 near the state line and on US-27 through Wayne and Union counties. In Ohio, ODOT crews are monitoring I-75, I-70 and US-35, where patchy freezing fog could leave slick spots on bridges and overpasses as temperatures hover near 32 degrees.
Motorists should slow down immediately when encountering fog banks, use low-beam headlights and increase following distance. Avoid cruise control and sudden braking on elevated roadways where thin ice can form first.
Conditions should gradually improve by late morning as temperatures rise and fog lifts, but pockets of reduced visibility may linger beyond 10 a.m. Additional advisories could be issued if dense fog redevelops.
