FORT WAYNE, IN — The Midwest’s first true December snow system is arriving tonight, blanketing northern Indiana and northwest Ohio with a fresh layer of snow that will likely disrupt early Tuesday travel. The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 PM Monday until 7 AM Tuesday, with 2 to 5 inches of snow expected across the region.
Snow is expected to intensify through late evening, with the heaviest bursts falling before daybreak Tuesday. Roads will quickly become snow-covered and slick, and visibility may drop below half a mile at times, especially along I-69, US-30, and SR-3. Bridges and elevated surfaces will ice up first as temperatures hover in the low 20s, creating treacherous early-morning conditions.
By midmorning Tuesday, snow will taper, leaving a cold but calmer day ahead. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, with highs near 30°F and light winds. Commuters should allow extra time for travel, keep headlights on, and watch for flash-freeze spots as plows and salt trucks continue cleanup efforts through the morning.
Meteorologists note that this system marks the start of an active early-December pattern, with several clippers and lake-effect chances returning later this week.
