Dayton, Ohio – Storms capable of producing a brief tornado could develop near the Indiana-Ohio border within hours Sunday evening, putting communities along I-70 on alert before nightfall.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, western Ohio sits in an enhanced level 3 of 5 severe risk through Sunday night. Storms are expected to fire along the Indiana border after 5 p.m., with the highest tornado potential between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. as isolated cells form ahead of a stronger line.
The most vulnerable areas include Dayton, Richmond, Eaton, and Greenville, where wind shear may allow a few storms to rotate. In addition to a tornado or two, wind gusts between 55 and 70 mph could snap tree limbs and power lines, especially along I-70 and U.S. 35. Hail up to 2 inches in diameter may damage vehicles and roofs in stronger cells.
Residents should identify a safe shelter now, charge mobile devices, and be ready to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued. Avoid travel during the evening hours as storms rapidly intensify and visibility drops.
The threat will shift east later Sunday night, but additional warnings are likely as storms organize and track deeper into Ohio.
