Richmond, IN – A multi-vehicle collision near the intersection of State Route 122 and US 27 on Saturday afternoon left one person dead and others injured. Authorities responded to the crash at approximately 4 p.m.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, initial reports indicated two vehicles were involved in the crash. Emergency personnel arrived and found a black 2017 Chevrolet Silverado and a red 2006 Dodge Neon severely damaged. The driver of the Silverado, 60-year-old Tony Byrd of Manchester, KY, sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 46-year-old Janine Byrd, was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital. Janine’s condition remains critical, authorities said.
Two juvenile occupants in the Dodge Neon suffered injuries and were transported to Reid Health for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.
The investigation revealed that the Chevrolet Silverado was southbound on US 27 when it entered the intersection with State Route 122. Meanwhile, the Dodge Neon approached the intersection, allegedly failing to stop at the stop sign. The collision caused the Dodge to roll several times before coming to rest in a field.
Emergency crews, including the Richmond Fire Department and Union County Sheriff’s Office, provided aid at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for their collaboration.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine its cause.
