Rensselaer, IN – An Ohio man faces multiple charges after allegedly trying to drive his vehicle off a tow truck to evade arrest on Friday.
Indiana State Trooper Carlson responded to a crash on southbound I-65 near the 206-mile marker, just north of the Rensselaer/Remington exit. The incident involved a 2008 Toyota Camry requiring a pullout.
Trooper Carlson’s investigation revealed the driver, later identified as Carlos D. Sept, 52, from Dayton, Ohio, allegedly lied about his identity. Authorities determined he was wanted in Ohio for a probation violation tied to violent crimes. As officers attempted to detain him, Sept fled across all lanes of I-65, nearly causing several crashes in the wet conditions.
The suspect ran into a ditch and then a field. Trooper Carlson relocated to the northbound side and prepared K9 Cooper to track the suspect. Sept emerged from the field, crossed the interstate again, and attempted to drive his car off the tow truck.
The tow truck operator fled on foot, leaving Sept to abandon his escape attempt. Sept eventually surrendered and was taken into custody by state police.
A K9 search revealed marijuana and suspected heroin in Sept’s possession. His probation violation was found to be non-extraditable. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
Sept faces preliminary charges, including felony possession of a controlled substance, intimidation, resisting law enforcement, false identity statement, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Final charges will be determined by the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.
