Gary, IN – A Gary man has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison following his arrest earlier this year for illegal possession of a firearm.
According to the Gary Police Department, officers responded in February to a call from residents who reported an armed individual near the 4100 block of W. 23rd Avenue. When officers arrived, they encountered Antawan Smith, who attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after without further incident.
Authorities said a firearm was recovered at the scene. During the investigation, officials learned Smith had five prior felony convictions, making it unlawful for him to possess a firearm.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force, and the Gary Police Department.
Smith was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to 68 months in federal prison, followed by 12 months of supervised release.
Police did not report any injuries related to the incident.
