Cedar Creek Township, IN – A man trapped in a grain silo on Monday tragically died despite an extensive four-hour rescue effort.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 11:04 a.m. to the 2200 block of 203rd Avenue after reports of a person trapped in soybeans. Local workers attempted to free the individual by cutting a hole in the silo to release grain.
According to the Lowell Fire Department, multiple agencies, including technical rescue teams and the Lutheran Air Medical Helicopter, assisted at the scene. Efforts included using a vacuum truck and specialized equipment to remove the grain.
Despite coordinated efforts, the man was found under several feet of soybeans and succumbed to his injuries. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner are investigating.
Agricultural entrapments remain a significant safety risk in Indiana’s farming communities. Officials urge farmers to follow safety protocols when working in silos.
