Greenville, OH – A high-speed chase early Sunday led to the arrest of an Indiana man in Darke County after he crashed into a pond. The incident began at 12:54 a.m. when a Darke County Deputy conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of State Route 49 and Hogpath Road in Greenville, Ohio.
According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, the Deputy observed suspected illegal narcotics in the vehicle. When asked to exit, the driver grabbed the narcotics and sped off, initiating a chase. The pursuit covered several miles, with the suspect driving north on U.S. 127 before deputies deployed stop-sticks, causing the vehicle to lose control on Kruckeberg Road. The car veered into a pond, where it became disabled.
The driver, identified as Michael Johnson, 33, of Union City, Indiana, attempted to flee on foot. Darke County Deputies, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, found Johnson hiding in dense vegetation near the pond. Johnson was treated for minor injuries at the scene and taken to Wayne Healthcare before being booked at the Darke County Sheriff’s Office Jail.
Johnson faces several charges, including tampering with evidence, failure to comply, obstruction, and resisting arrest.
