Logansport, IN – A rollover crash involving a semi-truck shut down US 24 for five hours Tuesday after a tanker leaked manure, prompting a hazmat response. The crash occurred around 2:38 p.m. near County Road 800 West.

Ricardo Melgarejo-Rivas, 24, of Wolcott, Indiana, was driving a 2021 Freightliner semi-truck carrying a tanker filled with liquid manure. For unknown reasons, he lost control, causing the truck to roll off the road. The tanker split, spilling its contents into a ditch and requiring a hazmat crew to handle the cleanup.

Deputy Chris Jones from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation. According to Sheriff Ed Schroder, Melgarejo-Rivas refused medical treatment and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

The highway was closed for five and a half hours while crews worked to remove the hazardous material. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities ask anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
