Indianapolis, IN – Multiple flood warnings have been issued across Indiana and eastern Illinois as river levels are forecast to rise significantly due to heavy rainfall expected through the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a series of Flood Warnings along the Wabash and White Rivers, citing up to seven inches of rain forecast over the next 72 hours, with additional rainfall anticipated Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service, moderate to major flooding is expected at several river points starting Thursday and continuing into early next week. Key locations under warnings include Montezuma, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Clinton, and Covington along the Wabash River. Similarly, communities along the White River — such as Spencer, Edwardsport, Hazleton, and Petersburg — are also at risk.

In Montezuma, the Wabash River is projected to crest near 25.2 feet by Sunday, flooding lowland areas, parks, and parts of county roads. At Lafayette, levels are forecast to reach 20.3 feet by early Monday, potentially isolating homes and affecting roads in Tippecanoe County.

Communities near the White River basin — including Bowling Green, Spencer, Newberry, and Ravenswood — should prepare for crest levels ranging between 19 and 26 feet, depending on location. In Petersburg, for example, water levels are expected to reach 25.5 feet, which has historically resulted in flooded roads and threatened local infrastructure.

The National Weather Service urges residents in all affected areas to avoid driving through flooded roads and to monitor further updates.

Forecasts may still change, especially with additional rain anticipated this weekend. Updated information will be provided by Thursday afternoon.
