Indianapolis, IN – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, ice, and high winds to central and southern Indiana beginning Sunday morning, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions and power outages.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday through 1 p.m. Monday for southern counties, with central areas under warning starting at 10 a.m. Sunday. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 4 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Additionally, southern counties could see up to a tenth of an inch of ice, compounding risks of power outages. Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph will further reduce visibility.
The NWS advises residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Those who must drive should take precautions, including carrying an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and hazardous, especially during the Monday morning commute.
Meteorologists urge Indiana residents to prepare for potential power outages and difficult travel conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and use 511 for real-time road conditions.
