East Chicago, IN – A 73-year-old man has died after a boat capsized in Lake Michigan near the steel mill in East Chicago, authorities said.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, marine and aviation units responded around 1:30 p.m. to a report of an overturned boat. One person made it to shore and was transported to a hospital, while another was initially unaccounted for. Authorities later recovered the body of the 73-year-old man from the water.
Officials believe the two men were fishing when the boat overturned due to high winds and rough waves. The hazardous conditions on the lake posed challenges for small watercraft.
Multiple first responder agencies assisted in the rescue and recovery operation. The Lake County Sheriff’s Dive Team and Aviation Units remain on-site.
Authorities have not released the identities of those involved. The incident remains under investigation.
