Imperial County, CA – An air quality alert is in effect for Imperial County as hazardous levels of particle pollution from windblown dust continue to affect the region. The alert is expected to remain active through Saturday, April 26, 2025. Residents across western Imperial County, including El Centro, Calexico, Brawley, and surrounding areas, are advised to limit outdoor activities due to the health risks associated with the dust storm.

According to the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District (ICAPCD), the windblown dust is significantly deteriorating air quality, with particle pollution reaching levels that could cause serious health issues. Sensitive groups such as individuals with asthma, heart disease, children, older adults, and pregnant women are particularly at risk. The pollution can trigger asthma attacks, worsen heart and lung diseases, and increase the risk of lung infections.

To mitigate the impact of the poor air quality, residents are advised to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and use air conditioning or air purifiers to filter indoor air. For those who need to go outside, it’s crucial to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) regularly. If the AQI is categorized as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” or worse, limiting outdoor exertion is highly recommended.

For travelers, especially those on dirt roads, the ICAPCD suggests slowing down to reduce the spread of dust. Residents can stay updated on air quality conditions by visiting the Imperial County Air Quality website or following ICAPCD on social media.
